Adulting is tough. No one handed us a manual on how to navigate life, relationships, and career growth while maintaining our mental and emotional well-being. But every experience—whether big or small—teaches us something valuable.

Yesterday, I had the chance to reunite with my college friend after eight years! We met at The Podium Ortigas, shared cocktails, pasta, coffee, and fries at Griffoni’s Italian Restaurant, and had some of the most meaningful conversations about life, career growth, and skillsets.

One of the biggest takeaways from our catch-up? The importance of saying no.

In a world that constantly demands our time and energy, learning to say no is not just about rejection—it’s a life skill. It helps set boundaries, protects our worth, and allows us to focus on what truly matters. And that’s something I wish I had learned earlier in life.

Why Saying No is a Skill You Need to Master

Yes, "saying no" is a skill, and like any other skill, it requires practice and confidence. Here’s why mastering this can significantly impact your personal and professional growth:

1. Self-Respect and Confidence Building

Saying no when necessary demonstrates that you value your time, energy, and priorities. It’s an act of self-respect. The more you say no to things that don’t align with your values, the more confident you become in making decisions that benefit your well-being.

2. Boundary Setting: Protecting Your Time and Energy

Not everything deserves your time and attention. By saying no, you establish clear boundaries that prevent overcommitment and burnout. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so protect your energy by prioritizing what truly matters.

Mastering the art of saying no involves assertive communication. It’s about expressing your needs without being aggressive or overly passive. The key is to be firm yet kind, showing respect for both yourself and the other person.

Many people struggle with saying no because they fear disappointing others. But declining a request doesn’t mean being rude. It’s about making thoughtful decisions that align with your priorities. If needed, offer an alternative solution or a polite explanation without feeling guilty.

If saying no makes you feel uncomfortable, here are some ways to practice it effectively:

• ✔ Use polite but firm language: "I really appreciate the offer, but I won’t be able to commit to this right now."
• ✔ Be honest yet concise: "I’m currently prioritizing my personal projects, so I won’t be able to join."
• ✔ Offer an alternative if possible: "I can’t help this time, but maybe next time!"
• ✔ Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to decline without over-explaining.
• ✔ Remember that no is a complete sentence: You don’t always need a long explanation to justify your decision.

🏝️ Asthma Attack in White Beach, Puerto Galera – A Scary but Unforgettable Trip! 😷

 Traveling is all fun and adventure—until your health suddenly takes a hit! My third day in White Beach, Puerto Galera took an unexpected turn when I suffered an asthma attack due to the cold and humid weather. 😷💨

Luckily, I always carry my trusty nebulizer, which I quickly plugged into the hotel socket to regain my breath. It was a frightening moment, but after resting and taking precautions, I was ready to explore again!

Despite the health scare, I still managed to:

• ✅ Enjoy a delicious Inasal na Manok breakfast 🍗
• ✅ Stroll around town with my local friend, who works at the beach

We were all set for the famous White Beach night party, but Mother Nature had other plans—rain poured down just as the night was about to begin. 🌧️ Did it stop us? Of course not! Instead, we took the fun to a KTV bar by the beach, where we sang our hearts out, enjoyed drinks 🍻, and partied with foreigners and fellow tourists.

The night got even better when fire dancers put on an incredible performance right at the beach gutter to avoid the rain! 🔥💃 The mix of fire, waves, and music created such a surreal vibe—it’s a moment I won’t forget.

In the morning, I woke up to the soothing sound of waves 🌊 and had a peaceful breakfast by the shore 🍳☕—the perfect way to wrap up this unforgettable Puerto Galera trip!

March 25, 2017 – a night I will never forget. Imagine being alone in your condo, about to sleep, when suddenly… someone knocks on your door at 1AM. 😨 My heart raced, and I felt pure fear because I wasn't expecting anyone at that hour.

I hesitated to answer, but curiosity got the best of me. When I asked who it was, a man responded, claiming he was there to pick up an item he bought. The problem? I never sold anything. ❌ Who picks up stuff at 1AM, anyway? My mind was filled with questions: Was my unit number given by mistake? Or worse… was this something illegal?

At that moment, I realized how scary it is when a stranger knocks on your door in the middle of the night. Was it a simple case of misidentification, or was there something more sinister behind it?

Canceled Plans: A Weekend Ruined by Sickness

This weekend was supposed to be filled with exciting plans, meet-ups, and productivity, but life had other plans for me. February 24 and 25, 2018, were meant to be packed with events, yet I found myself stuck in bed, feeling weak and unable to do anything. It’s frustrating when you have everything scheduled, only to be forced to cancel because of unexpected sickness. Instead of going out and making memories, I was wrapped in a blanket, battling body aches and fatigue.

 As much as I wanted to push through and go about my planned activities, my body simply wouldn’t cooperate. Sometimes, no matter how much we resist, we have to listen to what our body needs—rest and recovery. It’s a reminder that health always comes first, and missing out on plans is okay if it means taking care of yourself. Though I spent the weekend in bed instead of outside having fun, I took this as an opportunity to slow down, recharge, and remind myself that it’s okay to pause when needed.
