Living Alone with Chickenpox: My 14-Day Healing Journey in the City

 Chickenpox, or Varicella Zoster, is something most people experience during childhood. For me, it hit unexpectedly as an adult, and living alone in the city made the experience even more challenging. For 14 long days, I was confined to my small apartment, battling fever, itching, and discomfort without any family nearby to help me through it.

The hardest part wasn’t just the physical pain but the emotional toll of managing everything on my own. I relied on online deliveries for essentials and tried to stay positive by binge-watching comforting shows and staying hydrated.

This journey taught me so much about self-care and the importance of planning for unexpected health challenges when living alone. While it wasn’t an easy experience, it reminded me of my inner strength and the value of reaching out for support when needed.  In this exciting vlog, I embarked on a "Cinematic Video Shooting Challenge" set against the breathtaking backdrop of Panglao Island, Bohol. I teamed up with two talented Boholano creators, each armed with different video equipment, to see who could create the most cinematic, film-like video output.

The challengers? Ransel Dahab showcased his skills using a Canon EOS 700D (Rebel T5i), while Alexis Neil took on the challenge with a Samsung Galaxy A5 2016. As for me, I opted for the trusty Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Each of us brought unique techniques and perspectives to the table, proving that cinematic creativity isn’t bound by gear. From setting up perfect shots to exploring editing magic, this friendly competition highlighted the power of storytelling through video.

When the pandemic hit, many of us found ourselves in a whirlwind of uncertainty. I never thought I’d receive relief goods, thinking that the middle class was ineligible. However, our City Mayor of Mandaluyong reminded us that everyone, regardless of social status, felt the impact of this crisis. And yes, as taxpayers, we, too, deserved assistance.

When the relief goods arrived, I did a sit-down video to show you all the contents: rice, canned goods, instant noodles, and even some basic hygiene supplies. Unpacking those items made me emotional as I realized how the pandemic united us in shared struggles. It didn’t matter if you were wealthy, middle class, or struggling financially—everyone was affected in some way.

The act of receiving help during such a trying time taught me humility and gratitude. It reminded me that even small gestures of kindness could mean the world to someone.

🍴 Longganisa Transformation: From Ordinary to Extraordinary

The second part of my vlog focused on turning an ordinary sausage—our beloved Longganisa—into a special meal. If you’re tired of frying it the usual way, this recipe is a game-changer.

Here’s how I did it:

• Boil First: Instead of frying right away, I boiled the Longganisa to cook it evenly. After boiling, I discarded the first water to remove excess grease.
• Second Boil: I added fresh water and let it boil until the water evaporated. This method brings out the natural oil from the Longganisa.
• Flavor Boost: To elevate the flavor, I added a pinch of powdered pepper, chopped garlic, and diced potatoes.
• A Sweet Twist: Here’s the secret ingredient—pineapple juice! It adds a subtle sweetness that pairs beautifully with the savory sausage. Simmer until the sauce thickens to your liking.
• Finish with Butter: Just before serving, I stirred in a small amount of butter. This adds a rich aroma and enhances the overall taste.

The result? A sweet-savory Longganisa dish with natural sauce, perfect for pairing with steaming white rice. It’s a simple yet satisfying upgrade to a classic Filipino breakfast favorite!

Throwback to College: A Personality Development Exam or Pure Kalokohan?

Looking back at my college days at the University of Rizal System Binangonan Campus, one memory stands out—and not in the best way. This blog is about a final exam for our Personality Development class, a subject that, to this day, leaves me questioning its purpose. The "exam" was a fashion show where we strutted in front of our professor, dressed in various categories like swimwear, casual attire, and gowns. Watching the footage years later, now as an adult, I still can’t determine the rationale behind this activity. What was it supposed to teach us? Confidence? Poise? Or was it just a misguided attempt to make the subject more engaging?

As I revisit this throwback moment, I can’t help but cringe. Imagine a room full of students awkwardly posing, walking, and showcasing outfits in front of a professor and their peers—all for a grade! The activity felt more like a comedy skit than an academic exercise. Sure, some might argue it was designed to build self-confidence or encourage us to step out of our comfort zones, but did it really achieve that? For me, it left more questions than answers. What life skills were we supposed to gain from this? If anything, it feels more like an anecdote for a college reunion rather than a meaningful learning experience.
