Whether in Metro Manila or the provinces, a simple downpour can quickly escalate into rising water levels, making commuting and daily life a challenge. In this blog, I’ll share my firsthand experience of getting stranded in Mandaluyong after a sudden flood—and why it’s an issue we Filipinos continue to face.

When Light Rain Turns Into Deep Water 🌊

It all started as a normal day. My friend Allan and I decided to grab a bite at Joey’s Burger in Bumatay Street, Mandaluyong City. We were busy indulging in our food, laughing over casual conversations, and enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the place.

Little did we know that outside, the rain had started pouring. "Ulan lang ‘yan, titila rin," we thought. But to our surprise, when we stepped outside, the streets had already transformed into a mini river. The water level had risen way too fast—something we often see happening in the city, yet it still shocks us every time.

Suddenly, we were stranded. Even the tricycle drivers refused to take passengers, knowing that navigating through the flood would be too risky. We had no choice but to wait and hope that the water would subside soon.

Why Does Flooding Happen So Fast? 🌏

Flooding in the Philippines, especially in urban zones like Metro Manila, isn’t just about the rain. There are deeper reasons why water levels rise so quickly, even with light showers:

✅ Poor Drainage System – Many streets have clogged drainage due to improper garbage disposal. Trash blocks water pathways, causing rapid flooding.
✅ Urbanization & Lack of Green Spaces – Concrete jungles dominate the metro, leaving fewer areas for water to naturally seep into the ground.
✅ Sea Level Rise & Climate Change – The Philippines, being an archipelago, is vulnerable to rising sea levels, making flooding worse in certain areas.
✅ Typhoon-Prone Location – Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country experiences frequent typhoons, bringing in heavy rains that overwhelm our flood control systems.

The Struggles of Everyday Filipinos 🚶‍♂️🚖

For many Pinoys, flooding is not just an inconvenience—it’s a daily struggle. Commuters wade through murky waters just to get home. Public transport halts. Business operations get affected. Some even lose their homes due to severe floods.

And while we can’t control the weather, we can definitely take action:

🔹 Practice proper waste disposal to prevent clogged drainage.
🔹 Support flood prevention projects and advocate for better urban planning.
🔹 Stay informed about weather forecasts and prepare accordingly.

Experiencing floods firsthand is frustrating and sometimes even scary. My recent encounter reminded me how much work still needs to be done to address this issue. It’s not just about getting stranded after a meal—it’s about the bigger picture.

Flooding is a national concern that affects millions of Filipinos. If we don’t take action, we’ll keep reliving the same cycle.
