Christmas in the Philippines is more than just a holiday—it’s a season of love, joy, and family. Streets are adorned with sparkling lights, carols fill the air, and tables are prepared with lavish feasts. It’s a time when families come together, often traveling from distant places just to celebrate this cherished tradition. But for many of us, the call of duty takes precedence over the warmth of home.
This was my reality during Christmas 2016. As a call center worker, I spent Christmas Eve not in the comfort of my family’s embrace but in the bustling environment of my workplace. The office floor was alive with a different kind of celebration—a mix of camaraderie, sacrifice, and resilience. Instead of being surrounded by loved ones, I was with colleagues who had become a second family. We shared laughter, simple food, and stories, trying to fill the void of not being home.
Yet, this experience wasn’t unique to just us. Across the city, countless others were in the same boat—security guards braving the cold night with cups of coffee, food crew tirelessly serving meals to smiling customers, and hospital workers on standby, ready to save lives. Let’s not forget the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who endured the pain of separation to ensure their families back home had something to celebrate. Their sacrifices echo louder during these special times, highlighting the bittersweet nature of their devotion.
In the midst of all this, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions. Sadness for the moments missed, pride for the courage we all shared, and gratitude for the small joys we found in each other’s company. Christmas isn’t just about where you are; it’s about the love and effort you give, even in the hardest situations.
